Last Opportunity to Change Party Affiliation for the Presidential Primary

New Hampshire does not allow voters to change their party affiliation during the 90 days before a primary. While the date for the 2024 presidential primary has not been announced, the Secretary of State set October 6 as the last day party changes can be accepted. After October 6, party affiliation is locked until the primary.

Voters can change their party affiliation with the Town Clerk during regular hours (MON-WEDS from 12pm – 6pm) through October 6 or with the Supervisors of the Checklist at this session.

Note: The October 6 deadline is for party changes only. Residents will still be able to register to vote or update their name or address with the Town Clerk during office hours or Supervisors of the Checklist at a session or at the polls.

The Role of Party Affiliation in a Primary

Voters affiliated with a party can participate in that party’s primary only. Republicans can vote only in the Republican primary; Democrats can vote only in the Democratic primary.

Voters who are Undeclared can participate in either the Democratic or the Republican primary. Choosing a party’s ballot affiliates the previously Undeclared voter with the party chosen. They are not automatically returned to Undeclared. Changing party affiliation always requires an affirmative act by the voter. Previously Undeclared voters can return to Undeclared by signing a form at the Change Back to Undeclared table after voting in a primary. Or they can change their party affiliation at town hall later. Voters unaware that action is required may incorrectly assume they are Undeclared and will have a choice at the next primary.

Check Your Party Affiliation

The Supervisors of the Checklist urge all voters to check their party affiliation and change it if desired by October 6.

Voter checklist is available during regular town hall hours for review. Voters can also check their registration online using the Secretary of State’s Voter Information Lookup tool:
